An Overview of Seo Technology And Its Unreliability
This past weekend I had an epiphany: a revelation of the first order that demonstrated how many in the public have been duped once again by the SEO technology gurus. Now the unreliability of SEO technology would be made obvious to these eyes Being a newbie to this article writing business on the Internet, every article researched, on SEO enabling for articles and websites was read and implemented immediately. So, in spite of not knowing the difference between C.E.O. and SEO, my very article at Factoidz scored a “high” score for the rating. Now another “sacred cow” of technology that of SEO reliability would be slaughtered. The unreliability of the SEO image was going to come down at least in my mind.
Elated, this writer took Friday night off to go to church. That following Saturday morning while checking to see how all was going, sudden shock settled in. Several of the articles which had previously rated a “high” were now “low” and some that were “medium”, were now “high”. And without human intervention of any kind. Something smelled rotten in Denmark.
More researching was done and questions on web site forums was indicated concerning SEO rankings. No one came back with the same or nearly same answer. “Strive for a 5-7% score.” “No, go for a 3%.” “Don’t get discouraged.” “It’ll be alright in a day or two.” “Re-do the articles”. “Forget keyword density!”
Attempts To Recover and Restore SEO Compatibility.
After having changed the keyword density on some “test” articles in order to increase the density factor, some came back after just 3 seconds of twirling by the almighty SEO analyzer. Something was definitely wrong as usually it took up to 2 or 3 days of twirling. It had stopped spinning it’s analytical mind in seconds. This was the height of unreliability.
The Epipany
An article written about of all things, Vick’s VapoRub received the greatest all time page views of any of my articles, yet the SEO “monster” gave it a “medium” score. It had been written with pure SEO strategy in mind. Is the human reader and English language being sacrificed because of some weird little spider-like software robot making decisions? Is the fabled SEO technology actually an unreliable deficiency with a tremendous spin machine in full gear? Should the Internet gurus need to repent for their cover up of SEO’s technology unreliability?
The three freebie text analyzing sites, Keyword Analyzer, Live Key-word Analysis and Textalyser certainly are a help but be it known as far as this writer’s limited experience, all three have come in with different values and even different word counts. Perhaps not greatly differing but there is a difference.
Let’s look at just a couple of the myths of perpetrated by SEO gurus and the Internet powers that be.
* Only links from relevant sites matter. Truth – not that relevant links aren’t valuable but they are not required for ranking well in the search engines. This will come as the site grows in popularity. A link is just a link to the SEO monster.
* Another hoax. “My site will get banned unless I use 100% unique content!” More poppycock. Truth – try submitting the same article on an article bank directory and see if its ranking goes any further south.
* The Big Google Monster will get you and penalize you! This was the same stuff we were handed about Microsoft and its invincibility. And in what direction is Microsoft headed today? It’s going south.
Google is an algorithm-based system and it always will be and that’s all. It relies on the writer’s content, the writer’s links and the writer’s text to determine rankings. It’s a system that can be worked to generate as much traffic as one wants. This in turn depends on how many sites one feels like building, indexing and for how much web presence is desired. (1)
The Solution:
* One needs to learn a working knowledge about SEO technology, yes. But don’t get crazy with it.
* There is nothing like content. There I said it – the “C” word! CONTENT! A writer’s fame and reputation is built by content not algorithms.
* Once one knows the basics of keyword targeting (and what to target), online optimization and choosing a niche, it’s easier, a lot easier than being in bondage to any software tyranny.
* Just keep building content and get links.
* And one more thing: “follow the inner voice. ” Follow your gut feeling about your writing and about your site. “Follow the Force, Luke Skywalker”
Keyword density is basically the number of times your selected keyword, or keyword phrase, appears in a web page. Keyword density is calculated by taking the total number of keywords on a page and dividing that by the total number of all words on the page. I use the 3% density percentage for myself but let’s use 5% for illustrative purposes.
For example, if you have 100 words on your web page, (not including HTML code or any other code), and you use your keyword five times throughout the page, your keyword density is 5%. (2)
Here’s What The Numbers Look Like:
5 (total keyword usage) divided by 100 (total words) = .05
0.05 x 100 = 5%
Summary and This Writer’s Conclusion
This is not rocket science. SEO technology has a degree of unreliability. One cannot refute the figures. There are literally millions of websites and articles on the web with very high rankings. Many owners and authors are academics, professionals or otherwise plain folk who don’t know the first thing about SEO technology. Yet many of them are making millions of dollars from their sales or the proliferation of their articles through Google and other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo and Alta Vista. Write the best content one can and match it as far as possible with the SEO guidelines but go with your inner feelings, “trust your gut!”

SEO question by Pushpa: What are the most important factors for SEO offsite optimisation?
Hi All
I have asked a similar question for SEO onsite optimisation and would really like to know what offsite seo is all about – From what I gather its just link building but is it any sort.
Hope this makes sense
thanks in advance

Answer by Lucy Beer -WebTrainingWheels.com
It’s mostly about link building but there are some factors to consider.
When creating backlinks use a variety of link text and point to specific pages on your site that are relevant for that text, not just your homepage. For example if you sell cameras, you might use “Buy Canon Cameras” or “Reviews of Nikon Cameras” (you could get even more specific than this, but I think you get the point) – each one linking to the relevant page on your site, rather than using very generic links.
Paid links are not usually a good idea, and it’s better to get links from high-quality sites relevant to your site, rather than spammy sites. There are various ways to go about getting backlinks, from links on your social media profiles, to link swaps with blogs, guest posting, article directories and more.

SEO question by Johan Botha: How would removing date and time from blog affect its SEO ?
Has anyone experimented on this ? If we remove the date and time from a blog, how would it affect its SEO ?
SEO best answer:
Answer by Jake B
It will depend on where you are removing date and time from, the content or the url.
If it is the URL, you will have to make sure that the redirects are set correctly from the old date including urls to the new ones.
In content, not much but it might not convey to your users how old the post is when the come to the post permalink directly.

Not Necessarily for Dummies,
I suppose with an average of 5-Stars my review ranking makes me the curmudgeon since I offer only 3-Stars. Dummies books many times become complicated because they flounder around instead of getting straight to the subject matter, this book is no exception. While offering a plethora of important and valuable information the writings start, stop and go back and forth too often. I was armed with a highlighter and notepad but found myself constantly referencing back and forth, forced to re-read passages to collect all the data important to optimize according to the authors recommendations.
An example is discussing topics, which engage the readers interest only to suddenly stop with, “More on this subject in Chapter X.” Ok, so I put my highlighter down until later. This becomes frustrating. Discuss highlights in the book with an introduction and get to the point in one place, not later in several places. The checklist offered on the inside cover is a nice highlight and covering the topics once again in an introduction should be enough and will lead to less confusion.
As with all tech books, without any fault to the author, the subject matter becomes dated quickly. This is the case with SEO for Dummies but the basics offered are valuable as a starting point in optimizing your web site. Although keywords, content and reciprocal linking are stressed heavily, my own inadvertent experiment has shown content to actually be at least as valuable if not more important than incoming links for high-ranking sites. As an example, I have two web-blogs with Google rankings of 2 and 3 respectively which have virtually no incoming links only a lot of content. In these cases content proves extremely valuable. These blogs are relatively young.
The author makes an attempt to explain Googles algorithm but fails miserably to make a point, and serves no purpose in advancing SEO knowledge and very little is mentioned about the Google “Sandbox” which is the initial purgatory new sites are sent to while Google decides a web sites worthiness. Understanding the sandbox in extremely important so the Webmaster pro or amateur realizes page ranking comes with sweat equity and patience.
My largest disappointment came when visiting the authors web site which was not up to date and had several “dead links.” At this writing his Google site ranking is 5/10, which is very good but one must practice what they preach and these instances were glaring errors. Another problem is the author spends time discounting the use of “Frames/Frameset” but his site uses frames as viewed in the source code. If they should be avoided why does his site contain them?
I recommend this book if purchased with a deep discount. Next thoroughly read and digest the research information at http://www.marketingexperiments.com and incorporate all your information and experience into a business plan using their template. In combination with SEO for Dummies your site will be enhanced for SEO and you’ll have a deeper understanding of Google and other methods of SEO to increase site traffic as well as page ranking.

|Great Book,
I am a neophyte in web design and have a tech person in another city who has just started doing web design. She designed our websites but was not up on optimazation, and I wasn’t either. We both ordered the book and have now designed two websites using it.
The first searches fairly well but it wasn’t being found at all until we used the suggestions/instructions from the book so it certainly helped.
The second site was designed using the suggestions for titles, descriptions and keywords. I also believe the designer used all of the other directions for other parts of the site. We are just trying to get the site recognized at this point.
I would have to say, at least for myself, we would have not known any of the “secrets” to getting recognized without using the book. I am confident over time we wil get both sites readily recognized by the engines. It does seem to be somewhat of a science and the book help a lot.
I personally highly recommend the book and I don’t normally give out 5′s for anything, a big help.

|LOVE this book!,
While in the process of working on my new website, I came across this book and ordered it right away based on other reviews. I was not disappointed. It’s a must for anyone getting ready to launch a new site or anyone wanting to drive more traffic to their already built site. Even if you think you know a lot about keywords and SEO, this is an excellent buy. It did for me what a company specializing in SEO wanted to do for $8,000. I’m sure the SEO company would have provided an excellent service, but by reading this book, I’ve learned how to do it myself and will now know how to tweak my site in the future.

|All you need to know about SEO…,
As an seo consultant this book has played a HUGE role in helping me acquire the knowledge of seo i have today. I was a virtual seo newbie when i got this, my job requirements as an internet and ecommerce manager had been changed to include seo techniques and practices and i was more than a little worried that my ignorance of the subject would be found out, but by the time i’d read this twice i practically felt like i’d been involved in seo for years (yes, the transition was that smooth).
Here are my thoughts on this book.
Search engine optimization: an hour a day is a great read for anyone who wants to know all about SEO. It’s a well structured book that takes you by the hand, one step at a time, and leads you through everything from the basic fundamentals to the most advanced SEO techniques used by seasoned professionals. It’s incredibly detailed, maybe too detailed, from the fundamentals of keyword and website analysis to paid advertising, so much that at times it seems it’s a little more information than you can handle all at once(especially for an seo newbie).
I’ve read reviews that said it was too wordy but i think the book was meant to be taken a little at time, especially by newbies, not just rushed and digested in a single reading. You need to practice the techniques a little at a time to really grasp the importance of each. The fact that the book uses scenarios from real businesses as examples for readers to follow helps to give people who are unfamiliar with the whole SEO concept a clearer picture of what the authors are talking about.
The text and language of the book is easy enough to understand. The tools and resources mentioned throughout the book and especially at the end are very useful for anyone who’s interested in keeping up to date with the ever changing rules of seo.
Another invaluable resource that really makes me feel this book is worth it’s weight in gold is the third part which outlines a detailed 3 month seo plan to get your website to the top of the search engines for your chosen keywprds. Believe me it works! I know because i use it all the time for many of my clients. If you want to get your website to the top of the search engine rankings, “Search engine optimization: an hour a day” is all you need.

|Simple Comprehensivness,
After checking out numerous books on SEO I choose this because I liked its simple comprehensivness. The approach of this book is likened to the same manner one would eat an elephant, a bit at a time. I especially appreciated the authors use folksy humor to present complex materials, putting the reader at ease. The numerous notes made thoughout the book explaining important details, the right/ left brain debates were most enlightening.
I have studied SEO for awhile now and have had quite some success mostly from what I have learned in this book. I am not sure if this makes me an above average student or if there is much more that I am missing, perhaps I will have the good fortune to have my skills critiqued by the authors to find out.

|Search Engine Optimization An Hour a Day,
I am really enjoying this book. Some of it is a bit over my head because I am only mildly computer savvy but it is helping me to focus on SEO for my website. It is also giving me things to think about in terms of direction for my website. Worth the money.
